Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR)
The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is a German federal ministry that sets national research and technology policy and administers grant funding; it was created in 2025 out of the former Federal Ministry of Education and Research and additionally took over responsibility for space activities. It does not build quantum hardware or software itself, but disburses public money to universities, non-university institutes such as Fraunhofer and Max Planck, and companies through programmes including its quantum technologies framework programme, which funds work across computing, sensing, communication and post-quantum cryptography. Its role in the field is therefore that of a funder and policy coordinator rather than a technology developer or vendor.
